ABSTRACT

Objective To summarize and analyze the features of liver function in pediatric patients infected with Delta variant versus Omicron variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS - CoV - 2). Methods In this study,an analysis was performed for the liver function test results of the locally transmitted or imported pediatric patients with SARS - CoV - 2 infection during isolation who were admitted to Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital,Guangzhou Medical University, since May 21,2021,and the clinical data and the constituent ratio of liver injury were compared between the pediatric patients infected with Delta variant and those infected with Omicron variant. The independent samples t - test or the Mann - Whitney U test was used for comparison of continuous data between two groups, and the chi - square test or the Fisher's exact test was used for comparison of categorical data between two groups. Results A total of 85 pediatric patients infected with SARS - CoV - 2 were enrolled, among whom there were 32 (37. 6%)pediatric patients infected with Delta variant and 53 (62. 4%)pediatric patients infected with Omicron variant, and there were no significant differences between the two groups in age, sex, body height, body weight, and comorbidities (all P > 0. 05). There were no significant differences between the two groups in alanine aminotransferase (ALT),aspartate aminotransferase (AST),alkaline phosphatase (ALP),gamma - glutamyl transpeptidase, total bilirubin, albumin, and cholinesterase (all P > 0. 05),and the pediatric patients infected with Omicron variant had a significantly higher level of total bile acid (TBA)than those infected with Delta variant (Z = - 2. 336,P = 0. 020). However, the median values of TBA were within the normal range and the ratios of abnormal TBA were no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0. 05). Among the 85 pediatric patients,10 (11. 8%)had a mild increase in liver function parameters, among whom 7 had an increase in TBA,1 had an increase in ALT, 1 had increases in ALT and AST,and 1 had an increase in ALP. The analysis of liver injury in the pediatric patients infected with Delta variant or Omicron variant showed that there was no significant difference in the constituent ratio of liver injury caused by the two variants (6. 3% vs 15. 1%,chi2 = 0. 691,P = 0. 406). Conclusion Mild liver injury is observed in pediatric patients infected with Delta and Omicron variants of SARS - CoV - 2,but further studies are needed to evaluate the long - term influence of such infection on liver function.Copyright © 2022 Editorial Board of Jilin University

ABSTRACT

Objective: To summarize and compare the main traditional Chinese medicineTCMsyndromes of Delta and Omicron variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2SARS-CoV-2 carriers to provide references for the syndrome evolution and syndrome differentiation of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Method(s):The TCM medical records of imported and local cases of infection with Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 in Changsha since September 23,2021 to March 27,2022 were collected, including 18 Delta variant cases and 36 Omicron variant cases. Their TCM diagnosis information and TCM pathogenesis were analyzed and compared. Result(s): The common manifestations in Delta variant cases were cough, fever, chest distress/shortness of breath, sore muscles, nausea, dry mouth, dry or sore throat, thick and greasy tongue coating, and rapid and slippery pulse. The predominant pathogenesis was dampness-heat in the upper-energizer and heat stagnation in the lesser Yang combined with dampness. The occurrence of chest distress/shortness of breath, greasy tongue coating, slippery pulse, and the proportion of dampness-heat in the upper-energizer syndrome were higher in Delta variant cases than in Omicron variant cases P<0.05. The common manifestations in Omicron variant cases were itchy and sore throat, nasal congestion, running nose, fever, mild aversion to cold, dry mouth, dizziness, slightly reddish tongue with thin white coating, and rapid or wiry pulse. The predominant pathogenesis was wind-dryness invading defensive exterior, and heat stagnation in the lesser Yang. The occurrence of white-coated tongue and the proportion of wind-dryness invading defensive exterior syndrome were higher in Omicron variant cases than in Delta variant casesP<0.05. Conclusion(s): There are certain differences in TCM syndromes and the corresponding pathogenesis between Delta variant and Omicron variant cases in Changsha,Hunan. The Delta variant of SARS-COV-2 tends to induce dampness-heat syndrome, whereas Omicron variant infection tends to elicit wind-dampness syndrome, which is expected to provide a reference for the pathogenesis evolution of SARS-COV-2 infection.Copyright © 2022, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences Institute of Chinese Materia Medica. ABSTRACT

COVID-19 is a severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by a novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV- 2.COVID-19 is now a pandemic, and is not yet fully under control. As the surface spike protein (S) mediates the recognition between the virus and cell membrane and the process of cell entry, it plays an important role in the course of disease transmission. The study on the S protein not only elucidates the structure and function of virus-related proteins and explains their cellular entry mechanism, but also provides valuable information for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of COVII)-19.Concentrated on the S protein of SARS-CoV-2, this review covers four aspects: (1 ) The structure of the S protein and its binding with angiotensin converting enzyme II (ACE2) , the specific receptor of SARS-CoV-2, is introduced in detail.Compared with SARS-CoV, the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV- 2 S protein has a higher affinity with ACE2, while the affinity of the entire S protein is on the contrary.(2) Currently, the cell entry mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 meditated by the S protein is proposed to include endosomal and non-endosomal pathways. With the recognition and binding between the S protein and ACE2 or after cell entry, transmembrane protease serine 2(TMPRSS2) , lysosomal cathepsin or the furin enzyme can cleave S protein at S1/S2 cleavage site, facilitating the fusion between the virus and target membrane.(3) For the progress in SARS-CoV-2 S protein antibodies, a collection of significant antibodies are introduced and compared in the fields of the target, source and type.(4) Mechanisms of therapeutic treatments for SARS-CoV-2 varied.Though the antibody and medicine treatments related to the SARS-CoV-2 S protein are of high specificity and great efficacy, the mechanism, safety, applicability and stability of some agents are still unclear and need further assessment. Therefore, to curb the pandemic, researchers in all fields need more cooperation in the development of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and medicines to face the great challenge.Copyright © Palaeogeography (Chinese Edition). All right reserved.

ABSTRACT

There are three main components manufactured from whole blood: red blood cells (RBCs), plasma, and platelets. Plasma contains a multitude of different proteins, peptides, and biologic substances. Approximately 53 million liters of plasma was collected in the United States in 2019. Following collection, plasma is frozen and manufactured into plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs). During the manufacture process, several thousand plasma units are pooled for Cohn fractionation, which is based upon cold ethanol precipitation of proteins. The PDMPs are further prepared using ion exchange or affinity chromatography and additional steps to inactivate and remove infectious diseases such as viruses. Almost 20 different therapeutic plasma proteins are purified from plasma via these multi-step manufacturing processes. Interestingly, the demand for pharmaceutical plasma products, particularly intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) products, has been increasing. The manufacture and therapeutic role of blood derivatives particularly immunoglobulin therapy, Rh immunoglobulin (RhIG), COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) and hyperimmune globulins, albumin, clotting factors, fibrin sealants, and platelet rich plasma will be described.Copyright © 2022 AME Publishing Company. ABSTRACT

Respiratory muscles (RM) are a very important part of the respiratory system that enables pulmonary ventilation. This study aimed to assess the post-COVID-19 strength of RM by estimating maximum static inspiratory (MIP or PImax) and expiratory (MEP or PEmax) pressures and to identify the relationship between MIP and MEP and the parameters of lung function. We analyzed the data of 36 patients (72% male;median age 47 years) who underwent spirometry, and body plethysmography, diffusion test for carbon monoxide (DLCO) and measurement of MIP and MEF. The median time between the examinations and onset of COVID-19 was 142 days. The patients were divided into two subgroups. In subgroup 1, as registered with computed tomography, the median of the maximum lung tissue damage volume in the acute period was 27%, in subgroup 2 it reached 76%. The most common functional impairment was decreased DLCO, detected in 20 (55%) patients. Decreased MIP and MEP were observed in 5 and 11 patients, respectively. The subgroups did not differ significantly in MIP and MEP values, but decreased MIP was registered in the second subgroup more often (18%). There were identified no significant dependencies between MIP/MEP and the parameters of ventilation and pulmonary gas exchange. Thus, in patients after COVID-19, MIP and MEP were reduced in 14 and 31% of cases, respectively. It is reasonable to add RM tests to the COVID-19 patient examination plan in order to check them for dysfunction and carry out medical rehabilitation.Copyright © 2022 Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproduction. ABSTRACT

Basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) is one of the popular sequence similarity analysis tools. However, some students and researchers just blindly use the default parameters. Moreover, some students are confused about how to choose the right program. In a word, it is prone to be misused and researchers often draw conclusions incorrectly. In view of this, we traced back the internet hot topic in early 2020 - "MORDERATELY STRONG CONFIRMATION OF A LABORATORY ORIGIN OF COVID-19", and took it as teaching materials to guide the student to use BLAST currently through reanalyzing and reproducing the source of errors. Then we arranged an interesting experiment about fabricating dinosaur genes through modifying a chicken gene. In the experimental design to make the students grasp the BLAST tools better, one group fabricated the dinosaur gene and the other group decrypted the added bases. This instructional design could be conducive to cultivate students ' ability about distinguishing different viewpoints correctly, and we hope it can be enlightening and helpful to the teaching of BLAST tools.Copyright © 2022 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

To combat the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, many new ways have been proposed on how to automate the process of finding infected people, also called contact tracing. A special focus was put on preserving the privacy of users. Bluetooth Low Energy as base technology has the most promising properties, so this survey focuses on automated contact tracing techniques using Bluetooth Low Energy. We define multiple classes of methods and identify two major groups: systems that rely on a server for finding new infections and systems that distribute this process. Existing approaches are systematically classified regarding security and privacy criteria.Copyright © 2021 ACM.

ABSTRACT

Since its inception, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected health care as a whole. Cancer patients in general and those suffering from lung cancer in particular are a vulnerable group because of their many intrinsic characteristics and care needs. How SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection affects these patients regarding their risk of infection and outcome in this patient cohort is still to be determined. In this review, we tried to summarize our main concerns regarding COVID-19 in the context of cancer patients from a clinical and multidisciplinary approach. Different types of lung cancer treatments (chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy) may also influence the risk of infection and condition the patient's risk of having a worse outcome. Lung cancer patients require frequent radiologic study follow-ups, which may be affected by COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 related incidental radiologic findings can appear in routinely scheduled radiology tests, which may be difficult to interpret. Also cancer treatment induced pneumonitis may have similar radiologic features similar to those in acute SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia and lead to a wrong diagnosis. The different health care needs, the requirement for continuous health care access and follow-ups, and the clinical traials in which this patient population might be enrrolled are all being affected by the current COVID-19 health crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has put health care providers and institutions in difficult situations and obliged them to face challenging ethical scenarios. These issues, in turn, have also affected the psychological well-being of health care workers.Copyright © The Author(s) 2021.

ABSTRACT

The article presents current data on the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and criteria for its deficiency in children in different countries. Vitamin D is recognized as one of the most important vitamins involved in many biochemical processes in the body. Its active metabolites play a key role in calcium absorption, bone mineralization and promote phosphate and magnesium metabolism. At the same time, in addition to affecting mineral metabolism, there is a wide range of conditions in which vitamin D also plays a preventive role. Vitamin D has been shown to play a vital role in innate immunity maintenance and is important in prevention of several diseases, including infections, autoimmune diseases, certain forms of cancer, type 1 and 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin D is of particular importance for newborns and young children. This vitamin is involved in important physiological regulatory processes such as bone metabolism, lung development, maturation of the immune system and differentiation of the nervous system. Vitamin D deficiency increases risks of neonatal sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, respiratory distress syndrome, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Adequate intake of vitamin D and calcium during childhood can reduce the risk of osteoporosis and other diseases associated with vitamin D deficiency in adults. Recently, vitamin D deficiency has shown to be a potential risk factor for COVID-19 propensity. It has been established that to date most scientific pediatric societies have recognized the need to prevent vitamin D deficiency in healthy children of all ages, but data on the dosage of vitamin D in its prophylactic use differ. Most scientific societies recommend an average of 400-600 IU per day of vitamin D for prophylactic purposes. The analysis of published data shows the need to follow a strategy based on an individual approach, taking into account physiological characteristics, individual requirements and lifestyle.Copyright © 2021 University of Tartu Press. ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the clinical features of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Delta variant infection and abnormal liver function in Guangdong Province, China. Methods The patients with SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant infection who belonged to the same chain of transmission in Guangdong Province (Guangzhou and Foshan) and were admitted to Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University from May 21 to June 18, 2021 were enrolled in this study, and the judgment criteria for liver function were alanine aminotransferase (male/female) > 50/40 U/L, aspartate aminotransferase > 40 U/L, total bilirubin > 26 mumol/L, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase > 60 U/L, and alkaline phosphatase (ALK) > 125 U/L. Abnormality in any one item of the above criteria was defined as abnormal liver function, and such patients were included in analysis (the patients, aged < 18 years, who had a mild or moderate increase in ALP alone were not included in analysis). Clinical data were compared between the patients with normal liver function and those with abnormal liver function, and the etiology and prognosis of abnormal liver function were analyzed. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison of continuous data between two groups;the chi-square test was used for comparison of categorical data between two groups. Results Among the 166 patients with SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant infection, 32 (19.3%) had abnormal liver function with mild-to-moderate increases in liver function parameters, and compared with the normal liver function group, the abnormal liver function group had a significantly higher proportion of critical patients (chi2=38.689, P < 0.001) and significantly higher age and inflammatory cytokines [C-reactive protein type, serum amyloid A, and interleukin-6 (IL-6)](all P < 0.05). Among the 32 patients with abnormal liver function, 13 patients had abnormal liver function on admission (defined as primary group), while 19 patients had normal liver function on admission but were found to have abnormal liver function by reexamination after treatment (defined as secondary group). For the primary group, the evidence of abnormal liver function was not found for 3 patients (3/13, 23.1%), and the possibility of toxic liver injury directly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection was considered. Among the 19 patients in the secondary group, 9 (47.4%) had mild/common type and 10 (52.6%) had critical type, and all critical patients had the evidence of liver injury indirectly caused by the significant increases in C-reactive protein type, serum amyloid A, and IL-6 and hypoxemia;the evidence of abnormal liver function was not found for only 1 patient (1/19, 5.3%), and the possibility of toxic liver injury directly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection was considered. All 32 patients with abnormal liver function had [JP2]significant reductions in liver function parameters after treatment including liver protection. Conclusion As for the patients with SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant infection who belong to the same chain of transmission in Guangdong Province, the critical patients show a significantly higher proportion of patients with abnormal liver function than the patients with other clinical types, and other factors except SARS-CoV-2 infection and indirect injury caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection are the main cause of liver injury.Copyright © 2022 Editorial Board of Jilin University.
